Brenda Galvan (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

Arts / Entertainment

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

Prodigue!

Context:

Prodige! Il semble que la Nuit ait dénoué Sa ceinture et qu'en écartant ses voiles

Keywords:

Elle ait laissé, pour se jouer, Sur la terre tomber toutes les étoiles...

Wonder!

My comment:

"Filius prodigus" is a parabole of Jesus on a bad boy who wasted his heritage he asked from his father. "Prodige" in French signifies first a "wasting personality" - loosing much money - in vain in 19th c. psychological disease. A Nature "waisting" phenomena felt as beauty can be called wonderful, a figurative sense of "prodige" ...

My references:

Collins-Robert: French dictionary 21st c. edition
